JOHN ERIC ALEXANDER
John Eric Alexander grew up in a very creative environment. His mom is a designer and calligrapher, and held the position of Senior Designer at Penguin-Putnam Books for Young Readers for many years. His dad, Sam Alexander, was a creative force in the world of design for film and TV. Founder of Zeplin Productions and Sam Alexander Productions, Sam is credited as a pioneer of the new visual medium he called “Motion Graphics” back in the early 1970's. He was also a passionate photographer, and spent much of his free time exploring NYC with a Leica slung around his neck.
John graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1983 with a BFA in Communication Design, then literally fell into a hugely successful career writing original music for theatrical trailers and Network TV. After scoring a teaser for the film, "Power", starring Richard Gere, Mr. Alexander quickly ascended to 1st call status, becoming well-known in Hollywood for his driving electro-rock-orchestral trailer scores. From 1986-2002, John scored over 200 feature film trailers, including “The Fly”, “Lethal Weapon 1, 2, 3 and 4”, “Die Hard 1, 2 and 3”, "The Mosquito Coast", "A Few Good Men", “Broken Arrow, “Seven” and “The Silence of the Lambs”, as well as hundreds of Network Themes for CNBC, A&E, The Bio Channel and HBO.
By the late 1990’s, the music business had changed – time and money were tight, and original scores were being replaced by pre-existing "library" music and scores that the film studios already owned. With the call for original trailer music on the decline, Mr. Alexander was forced to make a career decision. Fortunately, his dad’s Motion Graphic business was busy, and John started picking up freelance projects – learning After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Cinema 4D along the way.
Fast forward 25 years, and John has become a seasoned Motion Graphics designer in his own right, credited with title and design work for hundreds of projects, for clients including: Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Miramax, A&E, FOX Sports, Bally Sports, ESPN, The Bio Channel, The History Channel, USA, Fox Reality, AMC Networks, SportsCastr, SPEED, TLC, The Sportsman Channel and FUEL.
When he's not chained to his Mac workstation, John enjoys spending time with his two sons, Mickey - a Senior Creative Director/Producer, and Joshua - an iOS Software Designer. John also enjoys photography, cooking, physical fitness, motorcycles and exploring Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO.
